As the University of Delaware’s Figure Skating Team prepares for the last intercollegiate national qualifying competition this weekend, the team has added one more event this season that has special meaning to two Team skaters.

On May 3the Fred Rust Arena will open its doors to host the UD Figure Skating Team’s fundraiser and benefit show, UDare Skate for the Cure, in support of JDRF and the Intercollegiate National Figure Skating Team Champions. Two UD Figure Skating team members have type 1 diabetes (T1D) and continue to competitively skate!

“We want to be able to give back to the community and found JDRF to be the perfect cause!” said Clara Sherman, a sophomore on the UD Figure Skating team who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was 2 years old.

Clara has to pay special attention to her blood sugar when she is skating and will test her blood sugar before and after she goes on the ice for practice or competition. During a recent lesson, she explained how she grew a little dizzy and skated off the ice to test her blood sugar. The test showed she was low she had to take a glucose tablet and some Gatorade to raise her blood sugar. After 10 minutes of resting to make sure her blood sugar was on its way up, she then was able to go back on the ice.

“Type 1 diabetes really is an invisible disease and most people are unaware that I have it,” Clara said. “Diabetes has become a part of who I am. It has never stopped me from accomplishing my goals, even if there are some hurdles to overcome.”

National and regional surprise guest skaters will perform at UDare Skate for the Cure May 3 from 3:30pm-6:30pm at the UD Fred Rust Ice Arena, 547 South College Avenue, Newark, DE 19716. Guests will have the opportunity to skate with the skaters after the show.

Tickets are currently on sale and cost $15 for adults, $10 for children.  Contact JDRF Delaware at 302-888-1117 to purchase tickets or to receive more information.
